the girl. he told us he heard the girl screaming and went into the home were a fi with the fire extinguisher. >> i sprayed around so i could get to the stairs. went i got the first set of stairs, the fire spread around me. i started crying because i heard the girl. i started spraying around, the windows started blowing out. >> that was kimberly tere live on treasure island. more from her at 6:00. no one was hurt in another fire in pacifica this morning. several cars and a building were damaged it happened on palmetto avenue. when firefighters got there, cars were on fire.

off-shore winds helped the flames spread to an auto repair shop next door. >> 911, i told them my building is on fire. there's a wrecking yard next door with cars and gas tanks. you could hear things xwlblowinp at the time. then i ran out. >> investigators are trying to figure out what started that fire. a 45-year-old man died this morning when he crashed into the back of a parked big rig. the crash happened around 6:30 on 101 at atherton avenue. the man was driving a dodge ram pickup and went off the road into the shoulder and slamming into the parked tanker trailer. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver of the big rig was sleeping in the cab at the time and was not hurt. chp does not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. if the president has his way, illegal immigrants could have a clear path to citizenship within eight years. "usa today" is reporting that the white house wants to move

forward on an immigration plan even as members of congress draft their own immigration bills. according to leaked white house draft, immigrants would have to pass a criminal background check, submit identifying information and pay fees for a new visa. they could then alpply for a wok visa if they learned english, and pay back taxes. the plan also includes new security rules and hiring guidelines. google's plan to build its own hangar at san jose airport is running into problems. another company has put a bid in for the development but was rejected for incomplete application. they say their bid is more lucrative than going sglool after a meteor impact in russia, a near-miss by an asteroid and a

fireball over the bay area last night, we're still here, but some day we may not be so lucky. a local group of scientists hopes this brings attention to their cause, a cause they all believe we should care about. bob has more from mountain view. >> reporter: inside one of these offices here in mountain view, a team of scientists are trying to save our cities from very large asteroids. this is home to the v6-12 foundation a non-profit group that has been raising money to send in orbit around the sun a space telescope that will be able to detect the asteroids we can't see from earth. within the first month of its operation in 2018, the foundation expects sentinel, as it is called to discover more asteroids than earth-based telescopes have over the past 30 years. nasa has reportedly found most of the big asteroids that could wipe out mankind, but the smaller ones that could take out

cities or regions, we only know about 1% of those. the goal for sentinel is to find those, and if we have several years warning scientists believe we could deflected any earth-bound rocks away from us. the bottom line, they don't want us to be blind-sided like we were yesterday when a large ten-ton meteor barrelled across the sky in siberia, traveling 59 more than 30,000 miles per hour, creating a shockwave that blew out windows and knocked down part of a factory. more than 1,000 people were injured. also yesterday, a 150-foot asteroid gave earth a close shave, passing 17,000 miles above the planet's surface. what's unnerve being that one, astronomers discovered it last year, too late do us any good if it was going to hit us. the asteroid gods treated the bay area to an amazing light show last night this is video of a fireball streaking across our sky around 8:00 in the evening. today the american meteor

pope could start earlier than march 15th. the current rules call for a 15 to 20-day waiting period between popes to allow cardinals from all over the world to travel to rome after the pope dies and lays in state. since the pope will step down on february 28th and no funeral is involved, there's discussion of starting the process earlier. now that most people on board that crippled cruise ship are back home, many say they plan to file lawsuits. officials are trying to determine what caused the fire that led to passengers being stranded for five days. a woman from texas filed the first suit saying carnival cruise lines failed to provide a seaworthy vessel. kim baldanado has one story. >> reporter: how does it feel to be back home? >> amazing. >> reporter: this couple were passengers on the ill-fated

carnival cruise ship the triumph which was left powerless on sunday. >> at 4:30 in the morning when we heard the fire alarm go off, alpha team, alpha team go to engine room six. >> reporter: for the next five days the ship was without air conditioning and working bathrooms. if you have to go number one go in the shower. if you have to go to number two, we're passing around red bags. >> we had sewage in the -- coming up out of our shower and in the carpets. >> reporter: devon is a tv producer and hosts the sci-fi series "haunted highway." because of his job he always carries extra gear and gadgets. >> he and my dad made these contraptions using zip ties, towels. >> a laundry bag. >> pulleys and things to heard some of the ocean air into our room. >> passengers who cabins were too hot slept outside. no one went hungry. thanks to other cruise ships which brought food. cheers went up when the first

we've all been enjoying this beautiful weather, but local winemakers feel it may be too warm for crops. >> if warm weather comes too early so might the blossoms making them vulnerable to a cold snap later on. that could lead to a reduced yield of grapes. winemakers admit it is too early and there is rain in the forecast. >> we have a good connection on that one. >> rob is here to tell us when that rain is coming and how much. >> the winemakers will see a big change coming up this week. at least today one more day of gorgeous 60s an 70s outside. right now 66 in san jose. 69 in sunnyvale. 65 in morgan hill. now as the sea breeze picks up,

we'll see the winds come in tonight which should bring in low cloud cover. something we didn't see the last couple of days. as winds turn onshore that will lead to some cooling, maybe some rain and low elevation snow heading into early next week. today we started off with high clouds. these were coming up out of the south, but dry underneath it did not bring us any rain. we did have low clouds come back to the coastline. that's one of the stories tomorrow. it will lead to temperatures coming down around the peninsula and seashore. we will go from this mild pattern, then the high will weaken, slide off to the left and a trough of low pressure drops in across the bay area beginning as early as monday night. the chance of showers late monday, tuesday we'll be going from 60s and 70s and highs in the low 50s on tuesday, air that will be cold enough for snow levels at 2,500 feet, 3,000

feet. maybe some mountain peaks around the bay area see a dusting. for the holiday weekend we should be fine. just trending cooler. from sunday into monday, extra low cloud cover. tuesday morning's commute could be a mess a good burst of rain coming through and snow flying in the sierra. rainfall projections for tuesday, we should see about a half inch of rain in the wettest locations around the bay area. this all happening after the three-day holiday weekend. but things may get messy on the tuesday morning commute. tonight patches of low clouds, fog, maybe some mist in spots. lows mostly 30s to low 40s for tomorrow morning. high temperatures tomorrow probably not quite the 70s. we'll see highs in the mid 60s around san jose and the coast. cooler as you move north. the low clouds will probably stick around. mid to upper 60s around the tri valley with patches of lows wil

west. near 60 in san francisco. 50s up and down the peninsula with the winds coming back onshore. the north bay locations today, highs in the low 70s. tomorrow low to mid 60s. watch these temperatures start to drop. those are highs for tuesday. those were low temperatures in some spots around the bay area this morning. highs in the low 50s. there comes the chance of rain and snow. the wettest day of the week looks to be tuesday. that trough will stick around for a while, which is good news because we are starting to fall behind in the sierra snow pack. the highs will be running quite cool. so hopefully everyone enjoyed the 60s and 70s. as the wineries pointed out, the >> i was up in heavenly skiing yesterday, they need more snow, but the warmth softened up the snow a bit and made it nicerments. >> almost t-shirt skiing.

>> almost was. that's my type of skiing. >> and for a lot of schools this is ski week. there was checking, crashing and holding on the ice today. these kids got a chance to try hockey for free this weekend. >> the main purpose to give hockey a try is let kids explore what sports they want to do. most kids are playing baseball, basketball, soccer. but hockey is one of the sports that you can play indoors. it doesn't matter what the weather is, whether it's cold, rainy, hot, sunny. you can do pretty much -- play hockey when you want. the organizers of this were ccm hockey, they had the volunteers out there donating gear, lessons and ice time. there are more events planned over the next few months in san jose and the bay area. right now we will check in
